What a great weekend at the Clinton Apple & Pork Festival! We talked to hundreds of people concerned about protecting the Mahomet Aquifer, and gathered hundreds of signatures on petitions asking Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn and the USEPA to take action to protect our sole source of water for over 750,000 people in Central Illinois. A huge thanks to Champaign County Healthcare Consumers, Sierra Club, and WATCH for their help creating a successful event.
The US Environmental Protection Agency said it will not proceed with a determination on the Clinton Landfill PCB permit application, according to the Champaign News-Gazette. They cite the recent permit modification by the IEPA that denies acceptance of PCB cleanups at the landfill as the reason. The USEPA website has updated its technical documents list with items from the Illinois EPA and the DeWitt County Board supporting this. Check it out:

Mahomet Aquifer Summit in Champaign this Saturday (7/12/14): Call to action and latest information on the efforts to protect the Mahomet Aquifer from possible contamination as a result of toxic wastes including MGP cleanups being dumped in the Clinton Landfill over the aquifer. How did this happen? What can you do to protect your water – and the water for future generations of Central Illinois families, farms and businesses? Hear from geological and legal experts, and find out what is being done and how you can help. Also, state and local elected officials will be sharing what they are doing to protect this vital source of water. The meeting, sponsored by the city of Champaign, will be held at the Champaign Public Library, 200 W. The US EPA Sole Source Aquifer public hearing in Champaign was standing room only – about 300 people attended and many private citizens and public officials shared their support of EPA action to protect the only water source for most of Central Illinois. People stood in line to express their support and concerns about the aquifer. William Spaulding, the Sole Source Aquifer Coordinator for US EPA Region 5, presented information about the US EPA plans to designate portions of the Mahomet Aquifer system in east-central Illinois as a sole source aquifer prior to the 2 hour public comment section of the meeting. The crowd was vocal in its support of measures needed to protect this invaluable source of clean water. You can make your comment part of the official record by sending it to the US EPA by June 12, 2014.
Express your support for the Mahomet Aquifer Sole Source Aquifer designation at two public hearings this week. The first meeting is Tuesday in Champaign and the second is Wednesday in Morton. Informational sessions begin at 6:30 p.m. and public comments will be heard from 7:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Written/email comments will be accepted by the US EPA until June 12, 2014. The public hearing where the US EPA will hear your comments about the Sole Source Aquifer designation has moved. The meeting in Morton on May 14 will now be at the Best Western Ashland House Hotel, 201 E Ashland St. Morton, IL. The Champaign meeting remains the same on May 13 at the Hilton Garden Inn, 1501 S. Neil St., Champaign, IL. An informational meeting will begin both nights at 6:30 p.m. and the comment portion of the meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. Oral and written comments will be accepted at these public hearings. Plan now to attend and show the US EPA your concern for the Mahomet Aquifer!
