The US EPA Sole Source Aquifer public hearing in Champaign was standing room only – about 300 people attended and many private citizens and public officials shared their support of EPA action to protect the only water source for most of Central Illinois. People stood in line to express their support and concerns about the aquifer. William Spaulding, the Sole Source Aquifer Coordinator for US EPA Region 5, presented information about the US EPA plans to designate portions of the Mahomet Aquifer system in east-central Illinois as a sole source aquifer prior to the 2 hour public comment section of the meeting. The crowd was vocal in its support of measures needed to protect this invaluable source of clean water.
